South Africa adapts Australian green rating scheme

South Africa is launching an environmental rating system based on the Australian Green Star system.

The new rating system is based on the Australian model instead of the UK standard BREEAM and United States' LEED scheme as climate conditions in South Africa are similar to those in Australia.

Bruce Kerswill, chairperson of the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBSCA), said: “The voluntary Green Star SA rating system is now being finalised and will be presented to the public at the beginning of next month.”

The rating system will reward buildings which reduce heat loads, maximise natural light and promote the circulation of fresh air while using energy efficient air-conditioning, renewable energy sources and environmentally friendly materials.
