Revamping the heating at Royal Hospital Chelsea

When CH2M Hill were appointed as contractors for the multi-million refurbishment of the historic Royal Hospital Chelsea in London, they knew the outdated heating system would need to be replaced.

A Jaga Heating Products Maxi Low Surface Temperature (LST) radiator with Dynamic Boost Effect (DBE) technology in the Rotyal Hospital Chelsea

As part of the update, CH2M Hill were to renovate the two Long Wards – home to the residents affectionately known as the Chelsea Pensioners. Each living quarters was to include its own en-suite bathroom and provide study space, thus improving privacy and quality of life for the residents. The architects also had to preserve all the original wooden panelling and single-glazed windows throughout in accordance with English Heritage requirements for the iconic building.

Jaga and CH2M Hill worked closely to ensure the right radiators were specified, factoring in the considerable heat loss that would come from the single-glazed windows. The Maxi Low Surface Temperature (LST) radiator with Dynamic Boost Effect (DBE) technology was chosen because it is one of Jaga’s safest, strongest and most powerful heating solutions.

While protecting the Hospital’s traditional British architecture was a necessity, the comfort and wellbeing of its residents was the top priority, which influenced Jaga’s recommendation for the Maxi LST.

Nzube Igwume, CH2M Hill building services engineer, said: “As well as our trust in Jaga formed through collaborations in the past, our safety concerns were further alleviated because its LST radiators have been specified on numerous care home and education projects that required consideration for vulnerable occupants.”

The Maxi LST conforms to NHS Estates Health Guidance Notes on surface temperature and casing design. Always cool to touch irrespective of high flow temperatures, it prevents the risk of burn and its curved edges decrease the likelihood of injury through a fall.

As well as providing safety from physical harm, the elderly residents are in constant need of accurate, carefully moderated temperature control.

“For Royal Hospital Chelsea, we were looking for a radiator that could provide rapid output when needed as the building experiences high heat losses due to poorly performing fabric,” Igwume added. “Jaga recommended its DBE boost fan accessory, which met this requirement perfectly, and its incorporation into the Maxi LST model kept the size of the radiator small.”

For the convenience of the residents, the DBE system noiselessly modulates its output depending on the level of heating required. It also features a unique, easy-to-operate power-boost button that instantly provides a rapid increase in heat output for extra control and peace of mind for residents.
