As part of South Lanarkshire Council’s primary schools modernisation programme, James Aiton Primary School underwent a £7m demolishment and complete rebuild – opening its doors to students at the beginning of June 2013.
The state-of-the-art facility comprises seven classrooms, separate assembly and dining halls, as well as a library and information and communications technologies room.
As the council was committed to doing its part for the environment, the building was equipped with a biomass boiler to reduce its carbon emissions. However, this meant it was imperative the facility was outfitted with efficient heating capable of working with this heat source. The council also insisted on a system that not only heated, but could also provide fresh, clean air throughout the classrooms – preventing the hot and uncomfortable feeling generated from the build-up of CO2.
“After several meetings with South Lanarkshire Council, they were happy to specify the Jaga Oxygen ventilation system along with Maxi LST radiators,” said Jason Boshell, Jaga representative for the project. “The solution we recommended was ideal as the Maxi radiator provided a safe, robust radiator, while the Oxygen system would guarantee the precise amount of ventilation required in the room at any given time, maintaining the correct temperature regardless of external conditions.”
Consequently, James Aiton Primary School became the first school in Scotland to implement Jaga’s unique Oxygen technology.
To help increase concentration and reduce lethargy, the Oxygen refreshers decentralised supply units – built into Jaga’s Low-H2O radiators – bring in the outside air before filtering it. Then the unit’s four mechanisms combine to create a controlled cycle of clean air, ensuring consistent circulation throughout the space.
The advanced intelligence of the system also allows for a master control to automatically regulate the intake of air based on the CO2 concentration measurements and expel the stale air outside at the same rate. The result is a fully balanced system only doing what is needed, saving energy by reducing the need to over-ventilate and over-heat.
The Maxi LST features a low surface temperature that remains cool to touch – an ideal solution in a classroom full of children. The safety considerations expanded further still, as Mr Boshell explained: “Jaga was able to provide bespoke oversized casings to aid the contractor in concealing all pipework connections and builders’ work openings so there were no exposed dangers – preventing the risk of accidental burns.”
Additionally, with an installation of 18 radiators, it was crucial to use a solution that was unobtrusive within the learning environment. Opting for the two-metre Maxi LST resulted in providing the same output as larger radiators from a more discreet, compact unit.
“Thanks to the considered combination Jaga recommended, the school is now benefitting from one of the most energy-efficient heating and ventilation systems on the market,” concluded Mr Boshell.
