Shepherd wins £14mill m&e hospital contract

Shepherd Engineering Services has won a £14 million contract to install mechanical and electrical services for main contractor Bouygues UK at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford.

Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust is undertaking a 30-month build programme as part of the centralisation and modernisation of acute services at the hospital.

Work is scheduled for completion by July 2010, when the new hospital will be capable of carrying out up to 20,000 treatments a year.

It will comprise 361 beds, five theatres, a 100-bed emergency assessment facility, a new A&E department, a pharmacy suite, a maternity & neonatal care unit, and a rooftop helipad for the Essex Air Ambulance service.

SES divisional director Derek Joiner said: “An extensive coordination process was carried out at the start of the project to ensure smooth management of the M&E services and to guarantee that Bouygues UK’s maintenance division, Ecovert, had high-quality services to work with at the end of the contract.”
