Airflow Developments has opened its head office in High Wycombe. The company says the facility has been designed to showcase the benefits of effective ventilation systems in both domestic and commercial properties, and to help educate and train attendees on best practice installation methods, as well as demonstrate Airflow's technology. The academy practices what it preaches from fully operational MVHR installations to show the importance of specifying the correct systems. Air quality in the High Wycombe building is provided by the company's Duplexvent commercial mechanical ventilation with heat recovery units, regulated by sensor technology and featuring the frim's VAV dampers for zonal control, from the cooling to the lighting,” said Airflow managing director. The facility also measures temperture, humidity, CO2 and nitrogen oxide in real time, as the company seeks to highlight how both personal wellbeing and workplace productivity can be improved with better indoor air. “We wanted to make the facility relevant to the first to open a facility that reports on air quality we believe.” “It's a facility that also helps us to provide first-class training and education on how to comply with legisation and best practice procedures when it comes specification and installation.”
The company has also used the facility to showcase its energy saving, installating an air source heat pump tigether with solar PV and underfloor heating to provide energy, heating and – where necessary – additional cooling. The windows are fitted with shading film to reduce the solar gain. “We wanted to be a company that doesn't just preach about energy savings, but practise it too.” “We will invest in energy storage as well when it becomes more economic to install the battery technology. That way, we can make the most of the energy generated at weekends.” The company has launched a suite of products in time for the Academy launch. The Duplexvent Multi eco is an additional to the range of commercial MVHR units. The units, from 500 cu m/hr to 7,800 cu m/hr, comply with regualations as well as the expected incoming legisation. They can recover up to 93 percent of other wise wasted heat at a sound output of 38 dB, which Airflow describes as “practically silent”. Air quality can be controlled a choice of G4, M5 or F7 air filters and the Multi eco can be fitted with Airflow's unique VAV damper system, which enables the user to adjust the building's ventilation based on zonal demand, without having to use BMS integration. The company is particularly excited about its VAV damper systems, which constantly monitor the air volume supplied and share this information with the ventilation syatme is able to respond to the demands of each area of a building. Airflow has also launched a new version of its popular Adroit whole-house ventilation units. The DV245 MVHR unit is Passivhaus-certified and is smart controllable Adroit Cloud, using Four operating systems: Home, Away, Rapid or fireplace. It can also integrated into house automation systems.

Due to the success enjoyed by the Team GB cycling teams in the Olympics, as growing intrest inhealth and fitness, the road bike is fast becoming an increasingly popular method of transport for commuters. A survey into cycling habits by the Bristish Council for Offices found that 39 percent of cyclists cycled to work every day. As a result, an overwhelming majority of respondents said there had been an increase in demand for cycling facilities in offices, with showewrs being the most sought-after. Perhaps the most intresting finding, is that more than half of the cyclists that the quality and availability of workplace cycle facilities facilities influenced their career decisions. Forward-thinking companies are already recongnising the benefits of looking after the wellbeing of their staff by making such provisions and, especially if it will help them attarct a skilled workforce, others may follow suit. This presents signifiacnt opportunities for heating engineers, who can marry the demand for shower facilities with the drive towards energy-efficient buildins. Traditional commercial systems employ a boiler, which generates space heating and heats a calorifier to produce hot water. Installalling a higher output boiler would naturally accommodate a higher demand for both hot water and space heating, but while demand grows for hot water, the need for space heating is declining somewhat. Higher levels of insulation in modern buildings mean less heat is lost, so central heating can run at lower tempertures for a shorter time. This, coupled with the popularisation of underfloor heating systems, which work at lower tempertures than radiators, mean that high output boilers are not always the most suitable choice.

One solution is to install a separate, dedicated water heater to cater to the hot water demand without wasting excess energy on heating. Separate space heating and hot water systems generally consumption and carbon emissions because the hot water energy load can be more suitably matched to the water output. On top of this, since water heated from a low mains temperture supply, high levels of condensing can be achieved, contributing to furthur savings. And let's not forget either that heating system boilers can be switched off in the warm summer months and thus the electrical consumption of boilers, primary pumps and secondary pumps can be reduced. We believe that a direct gas-fired storage water heater is perfect for such commercial applications as office buildings. Typically, the heat exchanger is located within the staorage cylinder so heat is transferred directly into the stored water. To further improve efficiency levels, this sort of water heater is deigned to heat water energy from the combustion process and to collect latent heat from the condensing of the flue gases from within the heat exchanger.
