The letter from J Farrer (H&V News 23 February) suggested that Gas Safe Register passes on the notification data it receives to manufacturers who then use this to sell extended warranties direct to customers. It is important to state clearly that Gas Safe Register does not, and will not, sell, or in any way use notification data for commercial gain.
For the avoidance of doubt – the Building Regulations notification data Gas Safe Register receives from registered businesses is used to satisfy the requirements of Building Control regulations and Gas Safe Register does not use, has never used and will not use notification data for commercial purposes or sell it to third parties.
This commitment has been in place since we took over operation of the gas registration scheme in April 2009 and forms part of our agreement with HSE.
As an entirely separate service (designed to reduce the amount of bureaucracy registered businesses have to deal with) we allow the registered business to register the appliance for the purposes of warranty. This agreement allows the manufacturer to send confirmation of warranty to the householder but, crucially, not any additional information about servicing or maintenance plans. This registering of warranty requires the business to seek the express consent of the customer regarding the use of their data.
If a registered business has any evidence that manufacturers are sending anything other than the agreed contractual documentation then we urge them to contact us and we will address the issue with the manufacturer.
Notification of relevant gas work is important to ensure that the legal requirement to comply with the Building regulations is met by registered businesses.
