WSP wins civils contracts for wind farms

WSP has been awarded three contracts to provide civil design support to DONG Energy on the Walney Extension (North West), Burbo Bank Extension (North Wales) and Race Bank Wind Farm (East Anglia) projects.

The contracts are for the provision of engineering services for all aspects of the civil design of the new onshore substations for the three projects.

Detailed design on the projects is now under way and it is anticipated construction on the first of the projects will begin in the next six months.

WSP senior technical director Jon Johnson said: “With over 20 years’ experience in transmission and distribution in the UK we will bring in-depth knowledge and understanding of onshore substation design to these high-profile offshore wind projects.

“Working closely with DONG Energy design engineers on a number of substations enables WSP to optimise and continuously improve the substation designs, assisting DONG Energy in driving down the outturn costs of the substations.

“Once complete the projects will make a substantial contribution to the renewable energy available to power the UK, helping to meet pressing government targets.”
