Industry feedback is being sought from across the commercial real estate sector to set out more holistic guidance for understanding and mitigating against indirect supply chain emissions
The UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) is leading a new consultation to create guidance for the commercial real estate sector on ensuring a more holistic understanding of carbon emissions throughout their whole value chain.
Feedback on scope 3 emissions reporting is now being sought from stakeholders working across the construction and property industry until May 31 to support the UKGBC’s recently announced framework intended to realise ambitions to ensure both new and existing buildings are net zero carbon by 2050.
The proposed guidance at the heart of the consultation will seek to identify relevant areas for reporting how an organisation’s wider production operations impact the environment. Scope 3 emissions are defined as indirect carbon output in the up and downstream value chain of any reporting company.
This would include the purchase, use and transportation of products, as well as the use of sold goods, according to the UKGBC’s consultation paper.
The organisation said in a statement, “The aim of this project is to build industry consensus on the sector-specific guidance and enable reporting companies to work towards a consistent outcome.”
“It will seek to clarify the reporting process and build on existing guidance, including the GHG Protocol’s ‘Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Accounting and Reporting Standard’. This should improve the accuracy of reporting overall within the industry and, ultimately, drive industry-wide carbon reductions.”
A webinar has been scheduled for May 16 to provide a further overview of the consultation ahead of the deadline for submissions later this month.
