Redditch Council fails to fulfil gas safety checks

Redditch Council faces criticism for failing to carry out gas safety checks in hundreds of council houses, Redditch Standard has reported.

Concerns were raised in August by council officers when they could not access a number of homes where gas safety certificates had or were due to expire.

The council had issued an urgent public appeal to tenants to get in touch after it was discovered that 927 of the borough’s council homes had not had a gas safety check – something that should be carried out annually.

The council also said that it reported the failure to the housing regulator, the Homes and Communities Agency, as soon as the issue was confirmed by its independent audit service.

Two dedicated gas engineers have now been tasked with carrying out the checks and tenants are being warned well in advance of the impending safety visits.
