Legionnaires’ disease confirmed at Boldon factory site

Health experts investigating a Legionnaires’ disease outbreak at a South Tyneside factory have found the potentially fatal bug in two cooling towers on site, the Shields Gazette has reported.

Four workers at Faltec Europe and a resident whose home overlooks the factory at Boldon Business Park have contracted the disease since last October, with four of the cases occurring over the past two months.

All cooling towers at the firm’s base were closed yesterday and were replaced with sealed water chiller units that do not present a risk of spreading the infection.
