Former chairman of Smith Brothers group and third generation member of family business dies aged 86
John Smith, former chairman of Smith Brothers has died aged 86. Mr Smith, who leaves a widow Edna and four children, was one of the third generation of the family-owned business behind wholesaler Smith Brothers Stores and the grandson of the founder Walter Smith.
Smith Brothers managing director Steve Smith told employees that his father was an inspiration. “We make no secret of our family heritage and John Smith built on both Walter (founder) and Sydney’s (2nd generation) foundations, leaving the business in the strong position it finds itself in today… Myself, along with my brothers and sister, remain extremely proud of his achievements in all areas of his life. For those close to him, funeral arrangements will be personally communicated in due course. But for now, all I have left to say is a great man will be sorely missed on both a personal and professional level Although SBS remains unaffected on an operational level, John’s passing invariably marks a sad day for Smith Brother Stores..”
John Smith was until last year the Chairman of Smith Brothers (Leicester), the parent company of the wholesaler, and after stepping back from the role, continued to play an active part in sister company Air Plants Dust Extraction.
