HVCA elects 2011/12 president

Bob Shelley has been elected president of the HVCA for 2011/12, taking over the role from Martin Burton, who continues to serve as immediate past president.

He is a senior project manager for Argent FM and has considerable experience within the HVAC sector.

His advice to contractors is that they must learn “many new tricks” to deal with recession, legislation, renewable technologies and sustainability requirements.

But members of the HVCA can take advantage of the wealth of advice, guidance, support and leadership available, he stated, vowing to maintain the association’s strength and initiate improvement wherever possible.

Mr Shelley initially served a four-year technical engineering apprenticeship with national contractor Lorne Stewart, achieving qualifications in environmental engineering from South Thames College, Wandsworth,
and South Bank Polytechnic.

He is a chartered director, a member of the Institute of Directors (IoD) and an associate member of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE).

After leaving Lorne Stewart in 1983, he held mechanical, design and engineering positions with Towco and Rotary Southern, before joining Lexair as operations director.

He was a co-founder of CCA Building Services in 1990 and, following a period of self-employment, was recruited by Oxford-based contractor Sharp and Howse in 1994.

He was promoted to managing director of Sharp and Howse in 1995 and, in 2000, became a director of parent company Symm Group Ltd.

He has been a member of the Council of HVCA since 2007 and served as chairman of the South East Regional Committee from 2009 until the spring of 2011, and as chairman of South Midlands Regional Branch for three years to 2008.

He is vice chairman of the Commercial and Contractual Committee and a former member of the Midlands Engineering Services Contractors Safety Group, became vice president of the HVCA in July 2009 and president elect in July 2010.

He succeeded to the presidency of the Association at its annual general meeting on 21 July 2011.

At the same meeting, Sue Sharp of Overclean became HVCA president elect, and Bruce Bisset, of Galloway Group, was elected vice president.
