A quarter of households in Britain are not regularly servicing their boilers and could be storing up problems for the future, according to a Carillion Energy Services survey.
Residents could be collectively wasting around £400 million pounds a year by failing to have an annual service because their boilers are operating inefficiently, the survey on Facebook suggests.
Carillion is using the site to offer advice on cutting heating bills by asking consumers basic questions about their central heating system and then using an application to show how much money could be saved if certain changes to the system were made.
Carillion Energy Services Heating marketing manager Vince Barry said: “To keep a boiler operating at maximum efficiency you really need to have it serviced once a year.
“Most manufacturers recommend this and in fact it’s a requirement for most warranties.
“The danger is that with everyone’s personal budget so stretched at the moment people will delay, or even avoid, having their boiler serviced at all, and it really isn’t a good idea.”
