Electricians' tax deadline looms

The deadline for registering with HM Revenue & Customs’ Electricians Tax Safe Plan is 15 May.

The plan has been launched as a time-limited opportunity for electricians to pay tax and interest owed, with penalties reduced to between 10 and 20 per cent.

HMRC states that these would can be up to 100 per cent in normal circumstances, combined with the possibility of criminal investigation for the worst cases.

Those registering by 15 May have until 14 August to make arrangements to pay the tax owed.

The scheme follows a similar plan for heating and plumbing engineers last year.

This has resulted in the arrest of 14 plumbers to date, with a jail sentence resulting from one case where £91,000 was owed in tax and national insurance.
