Revised guide considers role of dynamic time management to limit costs and reputational damage to the construction supply chain from delayed completion of projects
The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) has updated its guidance on time management for major construction and civil engineering projects in order to account for recent developments in technology and planning.
The updated version of the ‘Guide to Good Practice in the Management of Time in Major Projects’ aims to set out the latest approaches to best practice in terms of meeting requirements for standards, training and accreditation when planning projects. It includes a new chapter on working with a dynamic time model and how it can develop during the entire planning and construction process.
The role of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and traditional project procurement to better schedule vital work on major building projects is also considered.
Guidance author and former CIOB present Keith Pickavance said that failure to strategically manage time on major projects has proven “disastrous” for the entire construction industry and supply chain.
Mr Pickavance added that delayed completion on projects resulted in financial and reputational damage that could ultimately lead to the failure of contracting parties in some cases. He argued that these risks increased with the size of a project.
Mr Pickavance said, “This guide is a step-by-step illustration of how the parties can work collaboratively to meet this challenge using traditional project procurement routes or the most advanced BIM, from the adoption of a workable time-management strategy through to the day to day detail of risk management, using a predictive time model.”
The latest iteration of the guidance, which was first published by the CIOB in 2010, also focuses on topics such as the challenges of complexity in construction and engineering projects, along with providing relevant case studies and productivity advice.
The CIOB added, “The publication is the ideal handbook for project and programme management professionals working in civil engineering and construction projects, including those from contractors, clients and project management consultants.”
