The ninth Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week will take place between 17 and 23 November.
Heating and Hotwater Industry Council (HHIC) director Roger Webb said: “One fatality [from carbon monoxide] is one too many. CO is clear, odourless and tasteless, and people fall victim to its affects with little warning. According to the Gas Safety Trust, approximately 4,000 people are hospitalised every year suffering from CO poisoning and there are 40 fatalities. This is simply unacceptable.”
As supporters of Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week, HHIC is calling for:
- homeowners to fit a CO alarm;
- regular servicing of gas appliances by a Gas Safe-registered heating engineer;
- mandatory CO alarms to be fitted in all new-build homes in England and Wales; and
- more research into the health effects of non-fatal levels of CO exposure.
