BG buys heat pump firm ahead of forecast surge

British Gas has acquired heat pump specialist Cool Planet Technologies, in a further sign of anticipated strong customer demand for the technology spurred by the forthcoming Renewable Heat Incentive scheme (RHI).

Cool Planet sells and installs ground and air-source heat pumps direct to customers, as well as acting as a subcontractor for larger projects in both the commercial and public sectors.

British Gas New Energy managing director Jon Kimber said: “This acquisition delivers further on our strategy of developing a broad range of low-carbon technologies and advice that we can offer our customers, helping them to use less and cleaner energy.”

Mr Kimber added that British Gas is currently employing a ‘wait-and-see’ policy regarding plans for the market, but he identified residential and commercial new builds as having the most potential, particularly social housing.
