BEIS seeks heat pump expertise for UK electrification study

An invitation to tender is launched by government to study how best the uptake of heat pumps can be expanded to successfully electrify sections of the UK housing stock

The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) is seeking support to test the wide-scale potential for heat pump adoption across the country as part of a £16.5m research programme.

Funds will be provided to support testing of products and services in a ‘representative range’ of 750 homes across the UK in order to overcome current barriers to the uptake of heat pumps. This electrification of heat strategy is seen as a vital part of efforts to realise and introduce lower and zero carbon buildings.

An invitation to tender that was launched this month for the Electrification of Heat Demonstration Project has set a deadline of September 25 for receiving submissions to demonstrate the effective domestic applications of heat pumps. The project will also look at hybrid gas and electric solutions and the role they can play in different parts of the UK housing stock.

Participants are also now being sought for the project to generate some 1,800 home suitability surveys to provide a clearer understanding of the implications of switching over from gas appliances to heat pumps in different regions and property types.

A government guidance document for the invitation to tender stated, “These [surveys] will be spread across a representative range of housing archetypes and social groups, with the majority on the gas grid.”

“The project will then install and monitor 750 heat pumps across a representative range of housing archetypes, again with the majority on the gas grid.”

BEIS added that feedback from the project would be used to try and raise acceptance of, and interest in heat pump deployment, as well as where such technology would be most needed in the UK.

The department said it was presently in the process of seeking a management contractor to oversee the project. Separate invitations to tender for delivery contractors and an evaluation contractor will also be launched.
