Apprentices to get discounted London travel

Apprentices living in the London area will be able to benefit from cheaper travel from May 2013.

Boris Johnson has announced a new initiative which gives a 30 per cent discount off adult rate Travelcards.

You can get an Apprentice Oyster photocard if you are aged 18 or above, live in a London borough, are enrolled on an Apprenticeship with a further education college or training organization for a minimum of 12 months.

The Apprenticeship must be SASE compliant (Specification for Apprenticeship Standards in England) and delivered through a further education college or training organisation approved or funded by the Skills Funding Agency.

Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) chief executive Kevin Wellman said: “As a whole, apprentices are on low wages so I’m sure they will greatly appreciate this gesture.

“I believe it will also act as an incentive to encourage more school leavers to think about taking the apprenticeship route to a good career.

“Apprentices are certainly the lifeblood of the plumbing and heating industry and any scheme that recognises their hard work and commitment will be welcomed.”
