'Limited' help for college building work

A further £300 million will be ploughed into the crisis hit Building Colleges for the Future programme, but only a limited number of stalled projects will be helped.

Chancellor Alistair Darling the cash would allow the Government to get some of the 71 halted projects moving this year.

At the moment just eight of 79 projects recently approved by the Learning and Skills Council have been given funding to start on site after the body ran out of money.

The budget report said: “This will enable the LSC to fund a limited number of further projects through the BCF programme starting in 2009-10, based on prioritisation criteria to be agreed with the LSC and the sector.”

The additional £300 million of capital funding for investment in Further Education colleges will be available in the 2007 Comprehensive Spending Review period.
