NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde which manages Queen Mother’s Maternity Hospital refused to name the contractors involved and insisted disruption would be kept to a minimum despite two operating theatres being forced to close.
Elective operations were due to be undertaken at other hospitals while emergency operations could still take place at the hospital.
A statement by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said: “Dust was dislodged during a routine upgrade of the filters in our ventilation system in the theatres at the Queen Mothers.
“As a precautionary measure the theatres have been closed while the ventilation system is thoroughly cleaned.
“Alternative arrangements have been put in place for both elective and emergency surgery over the next few days and we expect the theatres to be fully operational by the beginning of next week.”
