Newham Gas Service Cares aims to reduce carbon monoxide emissions and lower running costs for tenants, as well as improve the safety of gas installations.
Newham Borough Council includes scale reducers and system filters on all installations, improving running costs and reliability for tenants and long-term maintenance costs for the council.
Its contractor has been tasked with installing a carbon monoxide alarm in all its 16,000 properties and replacing smoke alarms with a more accurate, newly developed model.
The council also puts regular articles in tenants’ magazines and posters in local housing offices. This is backed up with open days attended by the council and contractors where pamphlets and verbal advice are given.
To assist in the access of properties, Newham has developed and manufactured a device which can be used by those with vision and hearing impairments. The device can be adjusted by an engineer via a swipe card to change a tenant’s service date.
The council has also installed gas excess flow valves to all installations to protect its tenants and properties.
