Safety Initiative of the Year

London Borough of Newham – Safety for Tenants & Neighbours

Safety Initiative of the Year London Borough of Newham

As part of its ongoing focus of preventing hazardous situations arising within gas installations and protecting its tenants and their neighbours, the London Borough of Newham installed carbon monoxide alarms in all its 16,000 properties, while also replacing smoke alarms with updated models.

In addition to regular articles in its tenants’ magazine and posters in local housing offices, the company organises open days in partnership with its contractors, distributing pamphlets and verbal advice.

The installation of gas excess flow valves provides additional levels of protection to tenants and their properties.

Through working closely with both customers and contractors, the London Borough of Newham has also improved the quality and safety of installations.

Training for both contractors and staff is provided in a joint exercise to ensure that everyone is aware of the changes in the market. Its programme of upgrading systems is providing benefits to both the tenant and the general environment.
