Balfour Beatty Engineering Services (BBES) completed the £14.5m mechanical and electrical (M&E) services contract for the 7,800 sq m National Graphene Institute (NGI), which was constructed to carry out further research into graphene – a unique material that has many exceptional properties, including being 200 times stronger than steel.
BBES supplied the mechanical, electrical and process services for the NGI, which was built by BAM Construction. M&E services installed included ventilation, heating, cooling, domestic water, power, lighting, data, fire detection, security and BMS. The building’s laboratory function meant that several areas required close control of temperature, humidity, pressure, vibration and electromagnetic interference, which added complexity to the design of the M&E package. Process services for the laboratories and clean rooms were also installed, such as ultra-pure water, specialist gases, vacuum, compressed air, and solvent and acid extract systems. Computer-aided design, off-site manufacture and BIM have revolutionised the way BBES works, minimising waste and delivering customer value.
