Boiler warranties "misleading installers"

The merits of extended five year boiler warranties have been questioned by one of the UK’s leading suppliers.

Colin Gardner, Glen Dimplex Boilers managing director warns that these are becoming increasingly common but many do not provide genuine cover.

“Beware of the growing number of ‘watery’ boiler warranties that are simply used as a carrot and stick to drive sales without genuinely providing peace of mind for the homeowner or installer,” says Mr Gardner.

“If ever there was a need for a genuine extended boiler warranty, it’s now. With memories of last winter’s gruelling temperatures and the big autumn switch on fast approaching, homeowners need peace of mind that they won’t be out of pocket and without heat.”

He referred to a recent uSwitch report, which showed one in five homes faced problems with their problem last winter, costing over £300 to fix on average.

Many supposedly five year warranties are actually three year guarantees for parts and two years for labour, he continued, and frequently restricted to selected models for limited periods.

“To further mislead the installer, a whole string of conditions often come attached to these warranties. Whilst some demand compulsory attendance at training courses, others expect a certain volume of boiler sales before the deal applies or even membership of a loyalty scheme.

“And, considering that the price of the boiler may have been over inflated in the first place, these offers are little more than scandalous,” said Mr Gardner.
