WINNER: H&V project of the Year 2010

SES provided the design and installation of the mechanical services for the AstraZeneca Process Research and Development Laboratories in Cheshire, believed to be the largest such facility in Europe.

The facility comprises 13,000 sq m, 250 fume cupboards, 100 m3/s of fresh air, 1.6 MW of electrical demand, 1.4 MW of cooling and 2.5 MW of heating.

Among the innovations within the project was the design and implementation of the chilled water system serving the main laboratories.

Due to the very tight temperature and pressure restrictions of the glass condensers, only very localised chilled water recirculation systems had ever been utilised. SES designed and installed a full building system, serving all 250 fume cupboards within the facility.

The facility also makes maximum use of the site’s CHP system, whereby surplus steam is used to generate both the heating and cooling for the building through double pass absorption chillers.

Via use of maximum heat recovery from the single pass HVAC systems and utilising the heat rejection performance of the cooling towers, the facility could operate for over six months without any generated input of either heating or cooling.

The judging panel praised the “truly exceptional skill shown in keeping the project to budget and time scales in a challenging environment”.
