Renewable Project of the Year
The £3.5 million Greenwatt Way project is the UK’s largest zero-carbon development, a groundbreaking project of 10 eco homes that use the latest construction methods and renewable technologies to deliver carbon emissions to Level 6 of the Code for Sustainable Homes.
The main aim is to study energy usage and consumption and individual occupants’
interaction with zero-carbon homes. It has its own renewable ‘energy hub’, housing four different types of microgeneration; including ground and air-source heat pumps, a biomass boiler and solar thermal panels.
Vital Energi undertook the design, supply and installation of this, including Hydraulic Interface Units, a zero-carbon biomass wood pellet boiler and the Twin Pipe district heating network, which will significantly reduce the development’s CO2 emissions. Homes are fitted with the latest energy-efficient appliances and smart meters monitor the energy and water usage of the homes, which also benefit from grey water recycling, triple glazed windows and enhanced insulation.
