Outstanding Contribution

The project involved replacing the entire central plant and distribution mains, while upgrading the heating inside each dwelling of the various blocks within the estate.

Not only did the company install and commission a variety of energy-saving technology, but it also acted as the main contractor on the £7m project, which included construction of the new 260 sq m energy centre – incorporating an electrical substation and gas metering – organising the roadworks necessary to install and upgrade underground distribution pipework, and additional issues such as negotiating with the railway authorities, as the building sits alongside rail infrastructure.

Its features include banded brickwork and arched construction to reflect the character of the adjacent Network Rail viaduct. The energy centre includes one condensing and two high-efficiency gas boilers, all 3,500 kW, along with three combined heat and power units that provide heat and electricity to both the energy centre and estate.

The building energy management system gives priority to the CHP units whenever there is a demand for heat. The 2,500 m of pre-insulated pipework includes an electronic leak detection system. Each dwelling is fitted with a heat interface unit, incorporating two plate heat exchangers, with space heating provided steel panel radiators. Old and new systems continued to work in tandem until all upgrades were completed.

T Brown was chosen as the recipient of the Outstanding Achievement award for its achievement in handling all parts of the project, delivering a successful conclusion that will enhance the company’s reputation and that of the HVAC industry.
