The use of CSCS SmartCards

Dear Sir,

Further to the letter from David Woodcock (H&V News 23 February) regarding the requirement for CSCS cards on sites I would like to clarify the situation. As David rightly points out many main contractors have required all workers to have CSCS cards to gain access to their sites for some time.

The difference at the Tottenham Court Road tube station upgrade project is that JV contractor VINCI Construction UK/BAM Nuttall (VBN) is requiring all site based staff to hold CSCS SmartCards in order to reduce costs and improve safety on site.

Using SmartCards brings a number of benefits including eliminating holders of fraudulent CSCS cards gaining site access and reducing administrative time to check CSCS cards are valid and appropriate to workers’ roles on site. They also provide access to VBN’s in-house training records system to enable site managers to check that workers have received the necessary training to undertake their jobs safely.
