The Shepherd Group is a major family-owned construction and manufacturing business in the UK.

It was founded in 1890 in York, and its head offices remain in the city.

It is an unusual construction company by UK standards in that it is not only heavily involved in construction, property and housing, but also has a large manufacturing arm of which Portakabin is the best known brand.

The group's operations in national and international markets include substantial companies in construction and engineering, manufacturing and property development.

Its businesses cover construction projects across the private and public sectors, mechanical & electrical engineering, air conditioning and process services engineering, housebuilding and commercial property development.

It is also a manufacturer of modular building systems, park and leisure homes, integrated equipment housing and bulk solids material handling systems.

The companies which form Shepherd Group have developed to operate on a major scale, now employing around 3,500 people, with an annual turnover exceeding £700m.

Shepherd Construction was awarded a place on Partnerships for Schools’ £4bn academies framework.

It is also on the shortlist for the £4bn ProCure 21+ health framework, having joined the Medicinq consortium, led by Midas.

The group’s M&E arm Shepherd Engineering Services is working on the £130m Parkway development in Newbury, Berkshire having secured the £7.1m M&E job from main contractor Costain.

Costain also awarded SES the £16m M&E contract on the £631m Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority contract.

The Shepherd family was listed at 206 in the Sunday Times 2008 Rich List with an estimated fortune of £420m.

But the family dropped to 333 in the 2009 list with its fortune falling an estimated £250m to £170m.

In January 2010, Shepherd was set to restart work on the £210 million Trinity Walk retail scheme in Wakefield after the site was purchased by a consortium comprising the contractor, Area Property Partners and Sovereign Land.

In March 2010, Shepherd lost an appeal that would have allowed it to claw back more than £3m it was forced to pay two of its subcontractors when work stalled on Trinity Walk.

Shepherd had invoked 'pay-when-paid' clauses that the High Court ruled invalid.

In April 2010, Shepherd Engineering Services announced it had won £75.6m worth of building services work on jobs including John Lennon Airport in Liverpool; Goodhope Hospital and Bournville College in Birmingham; Holland Park School in London; Greater Manchester Police Headquarters; and BSF schools in Nottingham and Hull.
